NIS uses a United States curriculum which has been carefully tailored to fit the needs of our international student body studying in Asia. NIS standards are drawn from reputable sources including: In order to prepare our graduates for university anywhere in the world, we thoughtfully adapt such elements as History and Social Sciences to reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of our student population and the geographical location of the school. For similar reasons we ensure that both imperial and metric systems are taught in Mathematics and that Literature studied is drawn from classic and contemporary texts from around the globe.   Community Information

Nakornpayap International School (NIS) is a small, private proprietary school in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The school offers classes from Day Care through Grade 12, and is in its 22th year of operation. NIS serves the expatriate community of multiple countries as well as Thai nationals. The school, with an enrollment of 400 students, has a diverse student body with approximately 31 nationalities or combinations of nationalities represented. The top four groups represented are Thai, Korean, Thai/US, US, and British/Thai.

NIS has been fully accredited by WASC since 2001, accredited by the Association of Indian Universities since 2003, and is licensed by the Royal Thai Ministry of Education.

 

Curriculum

NIS is an English medium school. It uses a U.S. style curriculum, and has a college preparatory focus. Students at all levels must pass an entrance exam and interview before acceptance into the school. The entrance test is used to assess the level of the student to determine whether the applicant can be admitted into the age appropriate grade.

 

Electives and Extracurricular Activities

The school offers a number of diverse elective courses including Foreign Languages, Journalism, Model United Nations,Web Design,Year book. In addition the school has variety of extracurricular activities including Student Council, Intramural Sports, Music Bands and other after school clubs including Community Service.

Grading

Grading and Grade Point Averages are calculated as follows:

90% – 100% =-A 4.0 points

80% – 89% = B 3.0 points

70% – 79% = C 2.0 points

60% – 69% = D 1.0 points

59% and below = F 0 points.

 

No weighting is given for + or-, or for course difficulty. NIS does not calculate or give class ranking.

In the High School credits are counted from Grade 9 onward. Until June 2012 students in G12 needed to have accrued a minimum of 45 credits in order to graduate. However in August 2012 NIS changed the daily timetable increasing the number of periods in the school day from 4 to 6 so that more elective courses could be offered. Consequently this change has affected the number of credits students require for graduation. Please see the calculation table below which takes these changes into account:

NIS offers a number of AP courses, with plans to increase the number in the near future. We presently have AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP  Biology, AP Psychology, AP Economics and AP Studio Art Drawing and AP Studio Art 2- D design.
