NIS, the winner of "CyberDict Crossword game Northern 2010"
The "CyberDict Crossword game Northern 2010" is a competition to find the northern Thailand representative in six different games : Crossword, A-Math, Thai crossword, Sudoku, IQ Word Up and Crossword puzzles. Six of our students, Thep (Siwathep Khurana: G.11), Ice (Patcharaporn Putsongkram: G.9), Kat (Ornicha Laowong: G.9), Print( Panutda Buntancheen: G.9), Mild ( Pattanan Sikaewkhong: G.9) and Ying-Yng( Kanokporn Kaweeratanaphon:G.9) decided to join two games; A-Math and IQ Word Up. Ms.Pooh (Pimonrata Suriyawong:NIS High school math teacher) heard about this competition quite late , just 1 week before the competition day so the students only had five days to learn how to play and practice! The game was set up at Central Airport Plaza on Sat 16th January. We didn't expect any prizes because of the lack of practice! Thep said that there were around 500 students from the north of Thailand joining the competition. All 4 floors in Central Airport Plaza were full of people! The first game for us was "IQ Word Up" which we learnt to play two days before! Because Miss.Pooh couldn't buy the board game in the beginning but we did quite well. Ying-Ying said that IQ Word Up is a fun and exciting quiz game for learners of English. Each set contains thousands of questions graded into five levels (Beginner to Advanced) with all the answers included. Players of various ages and abilities may play together, each answering questions at their own level. Players throw the dice and move their pieces around the board, asking and answering questions as they go. The questions are in four categories: Missing Word, Crossword Clues, Multiple Choice and Spelling. Correct answers earn a scoring token, with the first player to earn two tokens for each of the four question categories being the winner. A-Math is a complex mathematics Scrabble/Crossword game. Instead of using words, the students will use mathematical equations to fill the game board. In most cases, the longer equations receive more points. Therefore, the players must think of long and complex equations within the given amount of time for their turn. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Ice won the first prize in the IQ Word Up and Kat won third prize! The last round of the game was so exciting; seven of the students past the first round and had to compete again to find the winner, all of them had to go on the stage. The last round felt quite like a TV game show! Each student had an empty white board to write down and reveal their answer. There were two judges on stage, one of them Thai and the other American. The English teacher from Montfort read the English questions. The last three questions were in Thai for example; "Which part of lemon can cure the stomachache? The answer is the skin!" Most of our students had the wrong answer except Ice! Ying-Ying and Mild answered all the Thai parts incorrectly but they did score well in the English Spelling section , including the words "transfixed" and "malicious".
In A-Math, Mild & Kat played five games with five different teams, winning two games with a score of around 450. Print & Ice also played five games but lost all of them because the completion was super good! (That s what they said)! Thep played individually with different students and won one game! He was so happy about it because in A-Math it was SO difficult to win! Most students practice for years and score a lot.
Thep said that next year Miss Pooh, would be shocked by his "bingo", using all the numbers on the hand to create equation, and he'd be the one with the A-Math trophy!
With this "A-Math club begins" we already have A-Math and Word Up Games right now, there could be more games later! Every A day after school in Miss.Pooh's room. Come and join us!
We'll practice more for A- Math to win more next year!!! Everyone said!
