The NIS P.E. Department

At NIS we offer a full Physical Education (P.E) program within the classroom environment and also as part of our after-school program. Each class is taught as mixed ability groups and P.E is an integral part of our school. At NIS we believe that each child is entitled to full access to participate in P.E regardless of aptitude or ability. It is our intention to develop the whole child – mentally, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. We are aware that all children require a program of P.E to fulfill their developmental needs. The courses are therefore directed towards each child’s needs in a positive learning environment, which promotes enjoyment, and appreciation of the subject area.

The Early Childhood Centre (ECC) children receive both swimming lessons and 'Music and Movement' classes. Both these classes focus on learning through fun and play to foster both the child's confidence and movement skills within the swimming pool and gym environments. Our swimming program is based on the Canadian Red Cross 'Learn to Swim' program, which has programs tailored especially for 3-6 year olds.

As we move into the Elementary school we offer a graduated swim program that is based around the safety skills and techniques taught in the 'Learn to Swim' program and also encompasses the skills the students will need when preparing for our twice annual swim meets. The Elementary students also have a full P.E. program that teaches a wide range of movement, and game-play skills, along with specific preparation for the various sports on offer at NIS throughout the year including track and field and badminton. We also are keenly aware of how important it is to keep up the students' fitness lessons and include fun fitness lessons for all. We also test each child from grade 3-6 using the 'Fitnessgram Test' three times per year, which allows parents to see their child's fitness levels and development throughout the year.

From grade 7-9 P.E. is compulsory and we carry on developing the students, helping to motivate each child to retain a lifelong interest in all aspects of P.E. and recognise the importance of living and maintaining a healthy life. We aim to develop a range of physical skills, stamina and strength and an appreciation of fair play, honest competition and good sportsmanship. As well as the general P.E. program we offer three 'Dance' classes a 'Sports Leadership Class' and an 'Advanced P.E. class.' The dance classes are available to all high school students and are set up so there are different classes available for both the beginners all the way through to the more experienced dancers. Within the Dance classes the students will learn techniques, develop strength and put together routines which aim towards putting on dance shows both within the school and at competitions throughout Thailand.

The sports leadership class is available to students from grade 10-12 and is a course that will help develop the students as young sports leaders who will be able to coach/teach/mentor the younger athletes at school as well as being able to referee and organize the various sports events we have throughout the year.

Lastly the advanced P.E. class is available for grade 10-12 students and is a class that focuses on more advanced skills and has a particular emphasis is fitness and exercise techniques.

NIS is part of the Chiang Mai Athletic Conference (CMAC) and as such is involved in many games, tournaments and competitions throughout the year. We participate in different individual and team sports and use our after school program to help these teams or individuals train for the games and competitions. All our teams are open to all students and we aim to make them enjoyable as well as a great learning and team-building experience for any student taking part.
