The NIS P.E/Dance Department

At NIS, we offer a full Physical Education (P.E) program within the classroom environment and also as part of our after school program. All classes are taught as mixed ability groups and P.E is an integral part of our school. Physical Education teaches children how their bodies move and how to perform a variety of physical activities.  Students learn the health related benefits of regular physical activity and the skills to adopt a physically active, healthy lifestyle.

At NIS, we believe that each child should have the opportunity to participate in P.E.; regardless of aptitude or ability. It is our intention to develop the whole child – mentally, socially, emotionally, spiritually and physically. We are aware that all children require a program of P.E to fulfill their developmental needs. The program is therefore directed towards each child’s needs in a positive learning environment, which promotes enjoyment, and appreciation of the subject area.

With high quality physical education instruction, students become confident, independent, self controlled, and resilient; develop positive social skills; set and strive for personal achievable goals; learn to assume leadership; cooperate with others; accept responsibility for their own behavior; and, ultimately, improve their academic performance.

The Early Childhood Centre (ECC) children receive both swimming lessons and ‘Music and Movement’ classes. Both of these classes focus on learning through fun and play, aiming to foster the child’s confidence and movement skills within the swimming pool and gym environments. Our swimming program is based on the Canadian Red Cross ‘Learn to Swim’ program, which has programs tailored especially for 3-6 year olds.

As we move into the elementary school, we offer a graduated swim program that is based around the safety skills and techniques taught in the ‘Learn to Swim’ program. The program also encompasses the skills the students will need when preparing for our bi-annual swim meets. The elementary students also have a full P.E. program that will teach a wide range of movement/game-play skills, along with specific preparation for the various sports on offer at NIS throughout the year, including track and field and badminton. We also are keenly aware of how important it is to keep up the student’s fitness lessons and include fun fitness lessons for all.

From grade 6-8 P.E. is compulsory and we continue to foster the students in an active environment.  We help to motivate each child so that they retain a lifelong interest in all aspects of P.E. and recognize the importance of living and maintaining a healthy life. We aim to develop a range of physical skills, stamina, and strength.  As well as an appreciation of fair play, honest competition, and good sportsmanship. The general P.E program offers three ‘Dance’ classes, a ‘Sports Leadership Class’, and an ‘Advanced P.E class’. The dance classes are available to all high school students and are set up for beginner dancers all the way through to the more experienced dancers. Within the Dance classes, the students will learn techniques, develop strength, and put together routines that will aim towards putting on dance shows both within the school and at competitions throughout Thailand.

The sports leadership class is available to students from grade 10-12. This course will help develop the students as young sports leaders; who will be able to coach/teach/mentor the younger athletes at school, as well as being able to referee and organize the various sports events we have throughout the year.

Lastly, the advanced P.E. class is available for grade 10-12 students. This class will focus on more advanced skills, and has a particular emphasis on fitness and exercise techniques.

NIS is part of the Chiang Mai Athletic Conference (CMAC) and as such is involved in many games/ tournaments and competitions throughout the year. We participate in different individual and team sports and use our after school program to help these teams/individuals train for the games and competitions. Our teams are open to all students and we aim to make them enjoyable as well a great learning and team-building experience for any student taking part.
