Middle School

The Middle School curriculum (Grades 6–8) focuses on preparing the student for High School. The program offers core courses of study adhering to Common-Core State Standards. Each student takes courses in the core subject areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. These courses offer the foundation needed to succeed in our College Preparatory High School Program. Students in grade 6 also have an advisory period of study designed to assist students in adjusting to middle school life. Additional courses such as Computer Science, Thai Language & Culture, Physical Education, Art, and Music also complement the curriculum. Modern Languages are also introduced in grade 7 and 8.

Grade 6

English Language Arts

Language Arts in grade 6 will see students build upon their literary foundations gained in elementary school.  The primary aim of the course is to prepare students for the academic rigors of middle school.  This will be achieved by examining various novels, producing writing samples, and improving independent research.

Mathematics

Sixth grade mathematics is about (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Science

The year begins with some basic chemistry, and then some aspects of physics and space systems are covered. Second semester sees geology, weather and climate studied, and introduces ecology towards the end of the school year.

Social Science

Sixth Grade Global Issues and World Geography is about (1) understanding the causes and consequences of human actions on society and how problems that arise from these actions can be solved by them;  (2) understanding the resources and environment of different nations; (3) the interactions and roles of various international, national, local and business in the processes that both create and solve the problems; and (4) analyzing how societies interact and respond to social and cultural influences.

Grade 7

English Language Arts

Language Arts in grade 7 will see students build upon their literary foundations gained from grade 6. The primary aim of the course is to prepare for the final year of Language Arts in middle school. This will be achieved by improving reading skills and establishing independent working skills.

Mathematics

Seventh grade mathematics is about (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Science

The first semester covers an introduction to chemistry, then shifts to physics with force and energy being studied. Second semester has more physics in the form of waves, and then becomes an introductory biology course covering cells through ecosystems.

Social Science

Seventh Grade Global Issues and World Geography is about (1) understanding the causes and consequences of human actions on society and how problems that arise from these actions can be solved by them;  (2) understanding the resources and environment of different nations; (3) the interactions and roles of various international, national, local and business in the processes that both create and solve the problems; and (4) analyzing how societies interact and respond to social and cultural influences.

Grade 8

English Language Arts

Language Arts in grade 8 will see students build upon their literary foundations gained from grade 7. The primary aim of the course is to prepare for the academic rigors of high school Language Arts in this final middle school year. This will be achieved by improving independent research skills and essay composition skills. The overarching theme of grade 8 Language Arts is forms of governance, equality vs. equity, and civil/ human rights.

Mathematics

Eighth grade mathematics is about (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modelling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analysing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Science

In the first semester, students study geology, basic palaeontology and an introduction to genetics. Second semester begins with origins and evolution, and then segues into ecology and environmental studies. The year finishes off with a short physics unit.

Social Science

Eighth Grade World History is about (1) acquiring knowledge about how the past has influenced the modern ideas, technology, economy, belief systems and environments students live in today; (2) analysing past events to identify patterns, problems and solutions and how they influence modern civilization; (3) understand the increased globalization of the world as past civilizations interacted with each other; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
