ADMINISTRATION
- Stephen RoderickPrincipal
This is my 44th year as an educator and my fifth as your Principal. The opportunity to work internationally – first in Vietnam and now in Thailand – has been unbelievably rewarding both personally and professionally. I am inspired each day by students who are eager to learn and teachers who are passionate about “doing what is best for kids.” I am equally encouraged by parents who are supportive of the learning environment we have developed at NIS and our plans for the future. In my early years as a student at Whittier College and Cal-State University, Fullerton, I never imagined a career that would be so fulfilling!
- Narvinder AhujaDirector
This is my 25th year working at NIS. I have a Bachelor of Science degree from Delhi University (India), and Master of Biochemistry degree from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, India. I also have a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I feel truly honored to have been with NIS from its very first day; and as I look back over the last 25 years, I am profoundly moved by the way in which that fragile little school has grown into the strong educational institution it is today. I am thankful to have been a part of its accomplishments as it has met successive challenges over the years. My vision for NIS in the coming years is to encourage a nurturing educational experience where high academic standards challenge our students and our teachers to reach their full potential as we prepare students for success in the years that follow.
- Warunee SwansonDeputy Director
I have over 30 years of experience in education. For 25 of those years, I taught at Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) as a classroom teacher and at various times also served as Head of the Thai Department, Head of the Foreign Languages Department, and Head of the ESL Department. I also served one year as the Acting Principal/Manager of the school. In 2003, I joined the NIS family as the Thai Principal and Elementary School Supervisor. In 2007, my husband and I moved to the United States, but I came back to NIS as an advisor every year for 4-6 weeks. It was fulfilling for me to maintain my wonderful relationship with the school for the ten years I lived overseas. This year, 2017, I have returned to NIS full-time as Deputy Director and Supervisor of the Early Childhood Center (ECC). It is an honor for me to work with a committed, amazing administrative team. I particularly appreciate the commitment of the school’s owner who always has the school’s best interests in mind. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Philippines Christian University, Manila, and I have Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Westminster College, Pennsylvania USA, and a Master of Arts degree in Religious Education from Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey USA. I have also completed a special course of study at Bowie State University, Maryland USA, which led to my certification as an elementary teacher by the State of Maryland. I love teaching. I always have. And I love children. My constant goal is to instill in them a love of reading, which is the foundation of learning. I enjoy working in the happy environment of NIS and look forward to working with the parents, teachers, and staff in the coming year.
- Oil MuangsaenSchool Manager
“I graduated from Chiang Mai University with a Bachelor’s Degree in German Language and a minor in Mass Communications. In 2004, I began working at NIS as the School Secretary and School Registrar. In 2016, I took on a new role as the School Manager. NIS is my second home. I feel that working in the school is similar to living in a large family. Families focus on caring for their children. Parents would like to see their child succeed, we do too. We encourage each student to be successful and we celebrate diversity. We want our children to try new things, be confident, and be different. If I had to find one word to describe NIS, I would choose the word “colorful” because NIS has a lot of flowers and plants, and also a lot of different people and cultures. NIS is a fantastic place to work. In 2018, NIS will be 25 years old, another big year for NIS to highlight and celebrate our students’ successes over the many years.”
- Benjamin WhiteAssistant Principal
I first joined Nakornpayap International School in January 2013. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and a Master of Arts in Teaching, both from the University of Leeds (UK). Before my current role as Assistant Principal at NIS, I was an English Language Arts Teacher, the Head of our Middle School program, and the Head of Academic Affairs. I am passionate about teaching and learning, fostering student/ teacher connections, and future-ready learning. It is a pleasure to come to school every day to work with a special group of students and teachers.
- Anzie YangmiDean of Students
I am so happy to be here at NIS! What a great school with great leadership, amazing students, strong curriculum, fully accredited and a supportive crew of brilliant minds. I grew up in Chiang Mai like many of the students here and graduated at another international school then went on to study a business degree called Organizational Leadership and worked in America for over a decade and then came back to Thailand. I consider Chiang Mai as my home and feel a strong sense of camaraderie with the students because of my similar background as them. As the Dean of Students my job is to work closely with the Principal, school personnel and the students to build and maintain a positive, safe school climate. Your child’s safety and wellness is my priority. As a parent myself, I believe there’s dignity and love in discipline. I will do my best to give each student what they need in order to be successful. At NIS we want all our students to be successful in all areas of their lives. We work tirelessly with them and with parents because collaborative team work is what we are about. “When parents are involved, we do our best!”
- Carole KetnourathActivities Director
“I have been at NIS since August 2009 when I had the honor of teaching NIS’ very first dance class and became one of the first women in the Physical Education department at NIS. Throughout the years, I have taught PE, Dance, and Fitness to High School students and established the Creative Movement program for ECC and Elementary students. Even though most of my work has been in physical education and performing arts, I actually graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies (honors) from Hamilton College, New York USA. During my undergraduate studies, I studied abroad at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing, China and Khon Kaen University, Thailand where I studied the role of education in sustainable community development. I also received a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from Ramkhamhaeng University, Thailand. I wholeheartedly believe that co-curricular programs that boost creativity, confidence, and character are the foundation for our students’ success as they grow up and pursue their life goals after graduation. ”

I am so grateful for the opportunity to work at NIS. Initially I moved to Chiang Mai in 1999 and taught for 6 years at Chiang Mai International School (CMIS). I then returned to my country, Canada, where I have spent the last 12 years at a private school. I have always longed to come “home” to Chiang Mai. The biggest gift and source of pride for me as a teacher is to now be able to work as a colleague with two of my former students - Ms. Anzie and Ms. Rachel. I look forward to working with you and your child as well, and hope that someday I will also be able to witness their success.

- El Jay EricksonHigh School Biology Teacher
As a 6th grader I can recall a moment when I realized that I had a deep interest in science, and decided that I would be a scientist someday. I pursued science through middle and high school, became focused on Entomology (insects), and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. However, during my last year of university, I became aware that although Entomology was interesting, it wasn’t a field that lent itself to helping people or improving the human condition. Therefore, after graduation, I enrolled in seminary with a goal of becoming a Youth Minister. I obtained a Master’s degree in Education, and while working as a Minister discovered teaching: a field where I could work with people and be involved with science. That was about 35 years ago, and I’m still teaching science today!
- Colin MercerHigh School Science TeacherI have a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California Santa Cruz and a Master of Science degree in Chemistry from San Francisco State University. Please allow me to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the newly appointed Science teacher at NIS. Leveraging my 5+ years of experience, I anticipate that I will be able to contribute highly to helping students meet their curriculum goals and provide them with a wider view of perception in the field of science and technology. After I graduated from high school majoring in science, I pursued a diploma in pharmaceuticals followed by a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology. I later completed a Master of Science in Biotechnology in Molecular Biology, Immunology and Biochemistry. Currently I am pursuing Doctor of Education, expecting to graduate by the end of this year. I was selected as Project Associate and Junior Scientist at University of Hyderabad India in the lab of animal biotechnology, working on Therapeutic Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery in Cancer. I also worked as a research and development scientist at a pharmaceutical research laboratory in India. For me, teaching is more than a profession – it is my passion, it is the mentorship of young minds. I feel delighted when I am surrounded by kids who are willing to embrace all the ways of learning. Through my experiences, I have developed expertise in lesson planning, classroom management, assessment, classroom action research and evaluation of students. I am well versed in assisting young children to build social, cognitive, emotional, and physical skills. I am adept at providing a stimulating yet safe classroom environment. In addition, I am committed to creating a friendly as well as language-rich atmosphere. We want our two children to grow up in this wonderful community and so far so good. - Mark HefnerMiddle School ICT Teacher
I’ve always had a passion for technology. After growing up and watching science fiction shows like Star Trek or Star Wars, I was hooked on the idea of technology having a major role in my life.
After high school, I took advantage of military opportunities to work on U.S. Army Nuclear Weapons for about 8 years until a peace treaty determined they were no longer needed. The army retrained me as a Patriot Missile System Repairer which I did for another 8 years before being assigned as an army recruiter before my retirement.
I moved to Thailand after I retired (20 years) in 2003, and taught English for 2 years near Cambodia in small villages as a volunteer. Since my retirement, I've earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in International Business from Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Currently, I'm working on another Master's Degree in Education in Teaching and Technology.
After earning my MBA, I was the Director of the Language Enhancement Center at Payap University prior to moving to NIS and working in the Academic Access Program (AAP). I'm now working in Middle School as a Computer Science and Digital Literacy teacher.
Although I've only been here for nearly 4 years, I feel like I've grown so much. I feel great satisfaction in being part of a dynamic team that is so influential in changing young people's lives for the better. Of all that I have done in my life, this is the most rewarding and the most important.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science in 2014 and just completed my Master of Arts in Teaching Health and Physical Education from Georgia State University in December 2018.
